"A good man will take care of his horses and dogs not only while they are young but also when they are old and past service." – Plutarch, 100 A.D.
Tana
Santana (Tana) is a 2010, approximately 14.3hh, Tennessee
Walker, buckskin, gelding. He is from Montana (‘Tana’?) where he was both a mountain and a
pack horse. Santana also carried kids bareback on a lead.
In 2021, Santana was abused and neglected by a ‘professional’ trainer (who is currently facing
lawsuits from other clients). Tana sustained two pastern lacerations from being boarded with
dominant mares. One laceration was close to, but did not reach, his ergot tendon. He healed
and is not in any discomfort although he has been on pasture almost ever since.
Seemingly because of his mountain experience, Tana does not like open trails and once crow-
hopped and took off with his owner on board.
Ideally, Tana would be re-trained, by an experienced rider, in a round pen with high panels.
He is a friendly, goofy in your pocket gelding who loves to lick. (Tana licked my pants from my
hip to my ankle.) His tongue is always exploring his world, and he loves to be loved on. Being
smart and mouthy, Tana can open chained gates. His Houdini gigs have gotten him out to the
highway and into town. Thus, a carabiner or other lock is crucial for his safety. Hay nets and
toys keep him curious and occupied.
Tana requires good dust-free hay, or he will cough incessantly. Since being in Minnesota, it has
been difficult finding quality hay for him. He aspirated once and developed pneumonia. Tana
has only had grass hay and has never had alfalfa. With quality hay, he is an easy keeper.
